From a distance, Germany seems to be a kind of a paradise for football fans. But is this image really the whole truth?
If you look closer you will get a different impression. If you just believed the newspaper reports or TV programmes over the last 16 months, you’d probably be afraid of even attending a football match in Germany.
Under pressure from populist police unions, self-aggrandizing agitators in the media, even subject to influence from politicians, combined with little knowledge of the situation inside the stadiums, the official football association (DFB) and football league (DFL) felt the need for rapid action.
Together with the clubs they produced a very rash concept called “Sicheres Stadionerlebnis” (i.e. safe stadium experience). They issued the paper without significant empirical analysis, without speaking with those people who fill the stadiums every weekend, those who are responsible for the brilliant atmosphere all over the country: us fans.
There is no alarming deterioration in the safety situation in German stadiums. Even the annual reports by the police attest to this. In fact the only alarming aspect presently is the threat to our fan-culture, which is intensified through the fuss around the safety situation. Therefore we don’t ask for more safety, what we ask for is this: How can we maintain a fan-friendly culture within football stadiums in Germany, now and in the future? In contrast to the debates about the safety issue, we want to improve things, and therefore invite everybody to our “Fankongress” on the 18th and 19th of January 2014, for a true dialogue. Thus, our motto for the coming congress is: „A fan-friendly culture in the stadium – how fans want football!”
We want to discuss issues like the democratic rights of fans within the clubs, about home- and away sections in the stadiums, about opportunities for self-regulation regarding discrimination within the ground, about social work with fans, about the fundamentals of voluntary PR-work, about threats to existence amongst smaller clubs, about the relationship between fans and the police, and much more..
